Englishjer Camp - Day 2

Sharifah Amani, Jasmin Hassan, Jamal Raslan, and Anwar Hadi. 4 big names gathered together in one place in one day with one purpose; to share and learn together.

Our Saturday morning at the campsite started off with a big breakfast. When I was a kid, my dad always reminded me how "breakfast is the most important meal of the day". And boy, he was right. It truly is. At breakfast, I had a quick chat with this one guy who came to the same campsite but for another camp. He was so excited when he found out that we're the team from Englishjer. I swear his face kind of like lighted up, something like that. One thing I'll never forget was his one tiny question, "Oh, is the camp for real? Ingatkan EJ main-main.". Sorry EJ. Lol. Dee, Puteri and myself accompanied a few campers right after to have a quick splishy splashy at the nearby river.

At around 10 plus, one of our most awaited speaker came, Kak Sharifah Amani! I was starstruck. It was beyond my imagination to have Kak Sharifah Amani right in front of me. She was adorable! I mean I've met her a few times here and there but the vibe was definitely different at EJCamp. You know, because she's THE Sharifah Amani. Sharifah Amani was at our camp. With the big picture of Building Confidence, Kak Sharifah Amani went totally honest sharing some of her biggest life experiences. From how she got her opportunity working with the late Yasmin Ahmad to how she got dissed by the public for just being herself. Have I mentioned how she was really adorable?

"Do you always speak perfect Malay to your friends? No? So why do you have to speak perfect English then?" - Jasmin Hassan

Right after lunch, we had Madam Jasmin Hassan on stage to talk about Communicate! Great combination I would say. Learning on how to improve your confidence in the morning and how to release it at right after. Frankly speaking, I only got to know about Madam Jasmin Hassan after a few tweets from EJ about her. My first thought when I saw her was, "eh, Nurul Izzah!". That's reminds me of something, I wish I had the chance to learn on how she wears her scarf. Urgh, so pretty! So Madam Jasmin Hassan gave a full length talk on how to speak English.

English isn't about grammar, I mean, we all know that grammar is important, but grammar isn't everything. It never was, and I don't see grammar as a big issue, so it never will. Speaking English starts from deep within, it starts from having the confidence to do so. I know I don't speak perfect Malay, although I try to from time to time because Malay is a beautiful language. Hence, I never stressed myself to speak perfect English. I just do. And we all learn along the way because as the saying goes, "practice makes perfect". So you know, just do, never be scared to make a few mistakes along the way. You'll get the hang of it darling.

Flying fox in the evening was so fun! We got ourselves pumping our adrenalin by climbing a few steps up the hill heading to the flying fox place and then went swoshing down. You know, some kapal terbang terbang tak ada pilot cause I'm so fly. (Although we do have our very own pilot up there with us, Abam Wan Arief Imran awh *insert big red heart emoticon*) I've been eyeing on the river since the first day we arrived so when the kids invited me over to join them for a quick dip, YES PLEASE. Have you guys ever tried floating yourself and just let your body flows down the river? Best thing ever! It was so calming, I swear all my problems floated away in a flick.

Aih. Now I miss swimming.

After dinner was Expression Night with Jamal Raslan.

I had a lot of fun during this one too. It was one the scariest because I had to use my brain to think and speak up a few times just cause "You look very familiar, you reminded me of someone I knew that's why I suka panggil you a few times". I am glad though because I learnt a lot from that session! Jamal Raslan is a poet, a spoken one. He speaks word, as compared to writing them. And he speaks beautifully. Please go check out his SoundCloud or something to listen, he is amazing! Wait I should probably link it down below, here:

Go listen!

We ended the night with some campfire session at the campsite.

Have you ever tried this amazing creation called s'moreos? Marshmallows squished in between an oreo and melts when you pop it in your mouth? I swear my heart probably skipped 24 beats as I pop each s'moreos in. Everyone were very creative in ensuring their food were well cooked. Sausages wrapped in aluminium foils, mini campfire oven by the side, you just name it. We had a great time singing along to the songs blasted through the mini speaker while Aika quarreled with Keren taking turns who gets to pick the next song on the playlist. We had Anwar Hadi to lead us a few songs too while he danced in the background. Definitely a whole lot of good times.

So that was my Day 2 experience guys! I know I took atleast 20 days after the first post to have this one up, but I'll try to summarise Day 3 in a jiffy! Till the next post, darling.

Englishjer Camp - Day 1

"The rise and fall of this camp is up to you”
CampMaster’s Booklet

Honestly, I was really excited. I packed up and waited for Ardini and Puteri (CampMasters that I haven’t met in real life fyi but they’ve decided to pick me up (‘: I MEAN HOW CAN STRANGERS BE SO NICE?) and off to Yayasan Peneraju office for one final briefing with the organizers and CampMasters before the real deal rolling in.

I’m amazed with the fact that most CampMasters are total strangers and surprisingly, we all can get along really well. Dude, to work with someone you don’t know is a challenge! Finally, after Jumaat prayer, we were all ready to get rolling!

The riddle for the Campers were given by the @englishjer the night before;

“Dear Campers, your first task for #EJcamp is to solve this riddle & find us tomorrow. See you across *American royalty. Good luck.”

THEY MANAGE TO SOLVE THE RIDDLE AWWYEAHH.

*across the Burger King.

Off we go! Some of CampMasters are needed to be there earlier than the Campers in order to check out the place and everything.

The moment we reached the Nur Laman Bestari camp site, my phone’s line were gone (most of us, I think) and the place was mindblowing.

Tell your teammates any 3 facts that consist of 2 truthful facts and 1 deceitful fact about yourself and they have to guess which one is true or false. Discovering your teammates, eh? I kid you not, the facts from my teammates that I’m getting were unexpected. FINALLY A MOVIE SESSION!

Well not really a movie session since the outdoor activity coach, Pak Long has to brief something so that everyone is mentally and physically ready for the outdoor activities sessions. A bit time consuming but it was a fruitful briefing.

While the movie (Dead Poets Society) was playing on the screen, the CampMasters and Campers finally meeting up and getting to know each other and also discuss on their essays.

One of the main objectives of #EJcamp is to help out the campers developing their essays (If I were Education Minister For a Year).

The Campers were signed up into pairs for each CampMasters. Interestingly, most of the pairs have different views and points from each other. This will help them to get more pumped up discussing their perspectives.

Of course, essays are not only our main concern, the main idea was to get everyone (by everyone, Campers and CampMasters and even the coach. yes, everyone) to be motivated, to be inspired to learn new things and continue learning as knowledge is never-ending.

In my case, my campers were amazing! Even though I’m pretty awkward at first (an awkward potato to be exact) but we managed to discuss not only about the essay, we did discuss about the education system, culture, fine arts, animals and after a while, a CampMaster Aika requested to join in. The more, the merrier! and I remember one of the Campers mentioned how he loves the culture of freedom. It took us quite some time and it ended pretty late.

Most of us decided to call it a day as the next day will be a long day!

(But some of us had a campfire after that without telling us that they’re planning to have one :( lol)

Original post: EJCAMP, DAY 1

Getting Started

The campmasters who came from all around Malaysia met for the very first time (well not actually haha just me because I wasn't able to come during the first meeting. for now let's just disregard who I am ok guys love you muah) at KL Central's McDonald and then Daniel bought us ice cream. However two of the campmasters went straight to Menara UEM so they didn't get any ice cream.

After we greeted each other we started to pack the stationery into cute little bags for the cute little (well okay maybe not) campers. Each of the  campers will be getting a file with a notepad, a fancy notebook where you can doodle on if you get bored listening to Qayyum talking, a really neat lanyard, a pen and a pencil which you can use to doodle if you're not in the habit of using your saliva to doodle. And oh my god the cute bag too like how much more lucky can you get right right RIGHT.

Right now it is 11:34am and in half an hour we will be briefed by the head of each bureau about the tasks that they will be undertaking so each and everyone of us will be aware of what will be happening around the camp so fret not campers for you will be in good hands!

I am so purrdy.

Ok bye.

Qayyum is jealous of my everlasting beauty.

Ok tune in for more updates by the social media bureau guys muah ciked.

HELP I'M DROWNING IN ALL THESE HASHTAGS

Campmaster's Meeting Part 1

After a year of cultivation, months of planning and mobilisation, the first ever Englishjer camp sees light and for the first time we are gathered together under the same drive of making education awesome and cool.. Well, that's the hope anyway. I'm confident we can do this.

Oh, of course in this first post I'd like to thank Yayasan Peneraju for their kind and generous support for the inaugural camp! We have long searched for a partner in propagating the Englishjer philosophy in learning and we couldn't ask for anyone better!

The first meetings with the Campmasters on the 18th and 20th February was held in the cozy Yayasan Peneraju HQ. It was great to finally sit down with everyone to discuss very vital aspects of the camp - like the camp mascot's name for example. Meet Atan! He's a vegetarian and has a cute little moustache that he carries around.

We also discussed roles and the camp schedule - glad we sorted that out. We had to take a vote on who would have to be responsible if someone suddenly passes out (hopefully not from over-eating). Don't worry, campers and guests, for you are in good hands! The only person who has never been to a camping trip is EJ.

Well, that's it for now! Looking forward to see the Campers this weekend!

(More pictures next time, I promise!)
